Liverpool Street to Heathrow is usually done on the Elizabeth Line in about 40 to 50 minutes, and a private car takes 40 to 60 minutes door to door. Liverpool Street is an Elizabeth Line station, so for most people in the City the train is the natural choice. A car becomes the better answer when you have heavy luggage, travel in a group, leave very early or land late at night.
This guide is for travellers starting in the City, Bank, Shoreditch or Fenchurch Street, and for people returning from Heathrow to the east side of London. It covers the Elizabeth Line, the Heathrow Express, the Tube, the bus and a private car, with fares, times and tips for each. If you would like a fixed price and a driver to take you from the City to your terminal, our Heathrow airport transfer page explains how that works.
After a late meeting in the City I needed to get to Heathrow without thinking. The driver tracked my delayed flight and was there when I needed him.

The short version
Take the Elizabeth Line if you are travelling light and want the best balance of speed and cost. Take the Tube if the fare matters more than the time. Take a car if you value certainty, have bags or children, or are travelling at an hour when trains are not running.
Liverpool Street to Heathrow by Elizabeth Line
Liverpool Street is an Elizabeth Line station, which makes it the natural starting point for the City. The line serves Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 directly, with Terminals 2 and 3 the most frequent and Terminal 5 about two trains an hour. Transport for London lists Liverpool Street to Heathrow as about 41 minutes with a change at Paddington, while other sources describe a direct service on some trains. Competitor pages disagree, so check the departure board and the front of the train on the day.
Here is what to expect:
-
Platform: follow the purple Elizabeth Line signs below the main station concourse. Allow a few minutes to walk down, because the platforms are deep.
-
Which terminal: trains marked Heathrow Terminal 5 serve Terminal 5. Other trains stop at Terminals 2 and 3 and Terminal 4. Check the destination on the train and the platform board.
-
Fare: competitor figures show about £12.80 to £15.50 for a single, depending on the source and the time of day. Pay with contactless or Oyster and use the same card to tap in and out.
-
Time: about 11 minutes between Liverpool Street and Paddington, and about 30 minutes from Paddington to the airport, so 40 to 50 minutes in total.
Using the Elizabeth Line well with luggage
Elizabeth Line trains are modern, with wide doors, level boarding in the central section and more space for bags than the Tube. That makes this the best rail option with one or two cases. At peak times, carriages near the platform entrances fill first, so walk along the platform to find space. For wider train advice, including the Piccadilly line and Heathrow Express, see our guide to train to Heathrow.
Liverpool Street to Heathrow by Heathrow Express
The Heathrow Express leaves from Paddington, so from Liverpool Street you first take the Elizabeth Line to Paddington, which takes about 11 minutes. Then board the express, which reaches Terminals 2 and 3 in about 15 minutes and Terminal 5 in about 21 minutes. It does not serve Terminal 4, so change at Terminals 2 and 3 for that.
Advance fares start at about £10, and standard single fares go up to about £26. The total journey is similar to the Elizabeth Line but costs more, because you pay for the Elizabeth Line leg as well. The express makes sense if you have a cheap advance ticket, or if you want a quiet seat with luggage racks and a predictable ride.
Liverpool Street to Heathrow by Tube
There are two ways to use the Tube. You can take the Central line from Liverpool Street to Holborn, then change to the Piccadilly line for the airport. Or, if you start nearby, you can join the Piccadilly line at Holborn directly. The whole journey takes about an hour to an hour and 10 minutes, and the fare is around £5.60 to £5.90 in the snapshot.
The trade-offs
It is the cheapest option, but trains can be crowded, there are stairs at several stations, and space for large suitcases is limited, especially at rush hour. The Piccadilly line also serves different terminals on separate branches, so check the destination on the train. If you are carrying more than one case, the Elizabeth Line is more comfortable for a few pounds more.
Liverpool Street to Heathrow by bus
The N9 night bus and some daytime routes reach Heathrow, but the journey takes over two hours, with figures of 2 hours 7 minutes to 2 hours 21 minutes on competitor pages. A bus makes sense only if the trains have stopped for the night or you are on a very tight budget. For most travellers, the Elizabeth Line or a car is far better.
Liverpool Street to Heathrow by private car
A private car takes 40 to 60 minutes door to door from the City, Shoreditch, Bank or Fenchurch Street. Traffic is heaviest from 7am to 10am and from 4pm to 7pm on weekdays, and the Congestion Charge zone applies during charging hours, currently £15 a day in the competitor snapshot. Your driver handles this. A fixed price is agreed at booking, so there is no meter.
Cost for groups
For groups, a car often beats the train on cost per person. Four people on the Elizabeth Line pay roughly £52 to £62 in total, while a shared saloon or MPV for four is comparable and comes with a driver, flight tracking and no changes. Do not rely on the very high taxi prices shown on some route-planner sites (£180 and above for this journey). They are not realistic next to current minicab quotes.
Business travel from the City
If you work in the City and need to reach Heathrow after a meeting, a car outside your office is simpler than walking to the station with a bag. A driver can wait if the meeting runs late, and you can take calls or work on the way. For frequent flyers, this is often the most productive way to travel, because the time in the car is time you can use.
From Bank, Shoreditch and the City
-
Bank: take the Central line one stop to Liverpool Street, or to Tottenham Court Road for the Elizabeth Line there. Or walk to Liverpool Street in about 10 minutes.
-
Shoreditch: Shoreditch High Street is on the Overground, one stop from Liverpool Street. Walk or take the Overground, then the Elizabeth Line.
-
Fenchurch Street and the wider City: walk to Liverpool Street or Tower Hill, or take a short taxi. A car from the City is the simplest if you have heavy bags.
-
Canary Wharf and the east: the Elizabeth Line also serves Canary Wharf, so you may not need to go via Liverpool Street at all.
Heathrow to Liverpool Street
After landing, follow the signs to the Elizabeth Line. Trains to Liverpool Street run from Terminals 2 and 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Some pass through to Liverpool Street directly, and others need a change at Paddington, so check the board. If you are searching for a way back from LHR to Liverpool Street after a long flight, a car takes 40 to 60 minutes and drops you at the door.
Arriving late at night
The Elizabeth Line stops running at night, and the last trains can be busy or delayed. You would need a night bus or a taxi after that. If your flight lands late, a driver who tracks your flight and waits at arrivals avoids the problem, and you are not left with a long wait or a high meter fare.
Luggage, step-free access and early or late travel
-
Lifts: Liverpool Street has lifts to the Elizabeth Line platforms, but the walk can be long. Ask staff if you need help.
-
Early flights: check the first Elizabeth Line train of the day. If your flight leaves before about 7am, a car is the safer option.
-
Late arrivals: the Elizabeth Line ends at night, so book a car for midnight landings.
-
Contactless: use the same card or phone to tap in and out to avoid overcharging.
-
Children: a pushchair works on the Elizabeth Line, but it is easier in a car with a child seat.
What if something goes wrong?
Check TfL's status page before you leave. If the Elizabeth Line is suspended, the Central and Piccadilly lines are your backup. If there is a strike, a pre-booked car is the most dependable choice. Always leave extra time for a long-haul flight.
