A Venice day planned backwards from all-aboard: the Piazzale Roma hand-off briefed, timed entries booked, the return leg driven against the clock.
Venice did something no other port on our map has done: it legislated its own skyline out of the itinerary. Since the 2021 ban, ships over 25,000 tons no longer transit the Giudecca Canal past the Doge's Palace — a loss for the sailaway photograph and a quiet gain for the city — and "Venice" now means one of three berths. Porto Marghera, across the lagoon on the industrial mainland, takes most of the big ships: solid infrastructure, zero romance. Chioggia, a lovely fishing town at the lagoon's southern tip, takes others — 50 km from the Venice your ticket pictured. And a handful of smaller boutique ships may still tie up on the city side; whether yours is among them is a question for your line, and worth asking before you plan a single hour. Our Yokohama page calls this pattern "the biggest ships, the farthest door" — in Venice the door was moved by law.
From Marghera, the practical route runs toward Piazzale Roma — a shuttle or bus of 25 to 35 minutes — and there Venice's own rule takes over, the one our airport page explains at length: no wheels pass beyond, and the last leg is vaporetto, water taxi or foot. From Chioggia the relay is longer: a bus to Mestre, a train to Santa Lucia, 50 to 70 minutes before the first bridge. Both routes work; both consume shore-day arithmetic the way Civitavecchia's does for Rome — and both end at a hand-off that is far calmer when someone planned it. A pre-booked car does the wheeled portion door to door, delivers you to the Piazzale Roma hand-off or the water-taxi quay with the onward leg already briefed, and collects you there again with the margin all-aboard demands.
Two timing notes belong on every Venice call. The city's crowds peak brutally in high summer, when a timed entry to St Mark's or the Doge's Palace is the difference between a visit and a queue; and in autumn and winter the acqua alta can put centimetres of lagoon over the very pavements you planned to walk — a reason to keep the day's plan flexible and the return leg generous. Our drivers watch both, along with your ship.
For embarkation and disembarkation, the pairing is Marco Polo: the airport sits on the same mainland shore as Marghera, well under an hour by road, which makes the fly-cruise leg here one of the gentlest in Italy — provided the car knows which of the three doors your ship was given. Ours does, before you land. One fixed price, one car, and the strangest cruise geography on the Mediterranean — a port that exiled its own ships — handled by someone who drives all three of its answers every week.
From the moment your ride is confirmed, everything is managed automatically to ensure a smooth pickup and on-time arrival.

Child seats fitted before you step off and one fixed price for the whole car — Chioggia's bus-and-train relay was not designed for a family's cases.
Ship-to-Marco Polo in well under an hour from the Marghera side — with the berth confirmed to the driver before the gangway touches.
Venice banned its own postcard: since 2021, ships over 25,000 tons no longer sail past San Marco, and the giants now berth at industrial Porto Marghera — or at Chioggia, a fishing town 50 km down the lagoon. Only smaller boutique ships may still tie up near the city, so the first question of any "Venice" cruise is which Venice you'll actually touch. A booked car with your berth tracked turns all three answers into the same calm start — and times the airport leg to your ship, not the brochure.
Ships over 25,000 tons use Porto Marghera on the industrial mainland or Chioggia, 50 km south; only smaller boutique ships may still berth near the city. Confirm with your line — the berth decides your whole day.
A shuttle or bus runs toward Piazzale Roma in 25–35 minutes — and from there no wheels continue: it's vaporetto, water taxi or foot. We drive the road leg and brief the hand-off before you land.
A longer relay: bus to Mestre, train to Santa Lucia, 50–70 minutes before your first bridge. A direct car to the Piazzale Roma hand-off spends that time in Venice instead.
Italy banned large ships from the Giudecca Canal in 2021 to protect the lagoon and the city. The postcard sailaway is gone; the berths moved to Marghera and Chioggia.
The airport shares the mainland shore with Marghera: well under an hour by road. We time ship-to-flight runs to disembarkation and check-in cutoffs, with your berth confirmed to the driver.
We track your vessel and the driver is told which berth your ship was assigned, adjusting the pickup automatically at no extra charge.
Two: summer crowds make timed entries essential, and autumn–winter acqua alta can flood low pavements — keep the plan flexible and the return margin generous. We build both into the day.
