One day in Mumbai, planned backwards from all-aboard: we sequence Gateway, Marine Drive and the markets so the ship never waits for you.
Mumbai's cruise story changed in 2025. The new International Cruise Terminal at Ballard Pier — soft-opened in April, formally inaugurated that September — is India's largest: four levels, some 72 check-in and immigration counters, berths for up to five ships at once including 300-metre liners, and capacity for around 10,000 passengers on a turnaround day, with shore-to-ship electric power to keep the harbour air cleaner. More important than any statistic is the address. Ballard Pier sits on Indira Dock in South Mumbai, beside the Fort district — which means the sights most ports bus you toward are, here, a short hop away: the Gateway of India and Colaba in ten to fifteen minutes, the great Victorian terminus of CST barely further.
That proximity comes with a local footnote: close is not the same as walkable. Between dock roads, security gates and the Fort district's traffic, strolling out with your daypack is a slow and sweaty start, and the city's two daily crush periods — roughly 8–11 in the morning and 5–8 in the evening — are exactly when ships arrive and leave. Taxis and app cabs do work here, and for a solo traveller with patience the rank outside is serviceable; what it cannot offer on a five-ship day is certainty. A pre-booked car with your name at the terminal exit replaces the longest queue of the morning with a door that is already open — and the price was fixed long before the gangway went down.
The discipline for a port day here is the sailor's one: plan backwards from all-aboard, not forwards from breakfast. Mumbai rewards the method. The classic loop — Gateway of India, a Colaba Causeway browse, Marine Drive's sweep, Crawford Market or the Kala Ghoda galleries — fits comfortably inside a day with a car and driver sequencing it around the traffic bands. The one timing trap is Elephanta: the island caves run on ferry schedules from the Gateway, and the last comfortable boat back leaves earlier than optimists assume — build the cushion before the caves, not after. And if the day ends at the airport instead of back on board, treat the 22–25 km to the terminals as 40–60 minutes on a kind run and more in the crush; our drivers plan for the unkind version, and the fixed price does not care which one you get.
One more Mumbai-specific comfort: this terminal was built for exactly the two journeys you need. For embarking passengers, the run from the airport or a South Mumbai hotel ends at a drop-off designed for luggage trolleys, not a scramble. For disembarking ones, the car can fold your bags into a last half-day — Gateway photos, a Marine Drive drive-past, lunch in Colaba — before the airport, so the holiday ends at the gate rather than at the port exit. One car, one fixed price, and the city that greets India's ships handled by someone who grew up in its traffic.

Mumbai's new International Cruise Terminal opened in 2025 at Ballard Pier, and its location is the whole story: you step off the ship already in South Mumbai, ten to fifteen minutes from the Gateway of India. The catch is the last kilometre — port roads and Fort-district traffic make walking out with the crowd a poor start, and 10,000 passengers can disembark here on a big day. A booked car waiting at the terminal turns the city's best-placed port into exactly that.
At the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal on Ballard Pier, Indira Dock, in South Mumbai — the new 2025-built terminal beside the Fort district, with berths for up to five ships at once.
Ten to fifteen minutes by car in normal traffic. It is close, but port roads and security gates make walking out impractical — ride, don't march.
Your driver waits at the terminal exit with a name board; the new building has a dedicated vehicle bay. We time the pickup to your ship's actual arrival, not the brochure's.
About 22–25 km: 40–60 minutes on a good run, more during the 8–11 am and 5–8 pm crush. For flights, we schedule around the traffic bands and track your ship's arrival.
The Gateway of India, Colaba Causeway, Marine Drive and a market or the Kala Ghoda galleries fit comfortably. Elephanta's caves are ferry-dependent — plan them early in the day, never against all-aboard.
We track your vessel and adjust the pickup automatically, at no extra charge. The price stays the one you booked.
Yes — from the airport or any Mumbai hotel straight to the Ballard Pier drop-off, with time padded for the city's traffic so check-in never becomes a sprint.
