Portsmouth to Heathrow is about 65 miles. It takes roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes by road, about 1 hour 30 minutes on the fastest coach, and two hours or more by rail. Choose a coach if you are watching your budget, a private car if you have cruise luggage or a tight sailing, and a train only if you like changes.
This guide is for cruise and ferry passengers, visitors to Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, and anyone flying in or out of Heathrow from the south coast. It covers distance and routes, the coach, train and taxi options, how to reach the ferry and cruise terminals, local taxi firms, and how to plan around your sailing or flight. If you want to see how a fixed-price car works door to door, our Heathrow airport transfer page explains it.
We came off the ship with four suitcases and a flight that afternoon. A car at the cruise terminal was exactly what we needed.

The short version
The coach is the cheapest direct choice, the train is slow and involves changes, and a private car is the best option for cruise luggage, groups and tight timings. The rest of this guide explains why.
How far is Portsmouth from Heathrow?
Portsmouth is about 63 to 66 miles from Heathrow. The drive uses the M25, A3 and M3, taking about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 20 minutes in normal traffic. Weekday peaks and summer weekends can add 30 minutes or more, particularly on the A3 and M25.
Why the time varies
The M25 between the A3 and the M4 is busy most of the day, and the A3 has long stretches of lower speed limits and roadworks. A single incident can turn a 75-minute drive into two hours. For a sailing or a flight, always add a buffer, and never plan to arrive with minutes to spare.
Portsmouth to Heathrow by coach
National Express service 030 is the direct coach. It runs up to seven times a day, with the first coach at about 03:20 and the last at about 20:00 from Portsmouth The Hard Interchange. Stops include the University of Portsmouth on Cambridge Road, The Hard Interchange, Heathrow Terminal 5 and Heathrow Central Bus Station. The fastest journey to Terminal 5 is about 1 hour 30 minutes. Fares start from about £24.60 one-way including a £1.50 booking fee. A Change and Go option costs about £5.
Terminals and luggage
If you are going to Terminals 2 or 3, use Central Bus Station. For Terminal 4 you will need a short transfer. Luggage rules apply, usually one large case and one cabin bag per person, so a cruise passenger with several bags may struggle.
The weak spots
The coach runs a limited timetable, and the last departure at about 20:00 means it is no use for late arrivals. If the coach is full or delayed, the next may be hours away, which is a real risk if you have a flight to catch. Other websites quote coach times of nearly three hours or more, so always check the operator's own timetable.
Portsmouth to Heathrow by train
There is no direct train. You can travel via Woking and the RailAir RA2 coach to Heathrow, or via London Waterloo and the Tube or Elizabeth Line. The journey takes about 2 hours 10 minutes or longer, and fares start from about £60 in advance on one site. Third-party figures vary widely and are not consistent, so check the current fare.
Is the train worth it?
For luggage-heavy travellers, the changes at Woking or Waterloo are not ideal. Each change is a chance to miss a connection, and trains are crowded at peak times. The train works for a light-packing traveller with a flexible schedule. For a cruise passenger, it rarely makes sense.
Portsmouth to Heathrow by taxi or private transfer
A Portsmouth to Heathrow taxi is the easiest choice with luggage. Competitors quote about £125 for a saloon with three passengers, and other sources show £140 to £215 including up to an hour of waiting time. A fixed price removes any surprise from traffic.
What is included
Meet and greet, flight tracking and vehicle choice are standard, and vehicles range from saloons to minibuses. If you search for airport taxis or airport transfers from Portsmouth to Heathrow, look for fixed pricing and a stated waiting time, because a low quote may exclude waiting or luggage. Tell the provider how many bags you have so the right vehicle is sent.
Cost for a group
For a family or a group of three or four, the cost per person can be close to the coach plus the taxis you would need at each end. A single door-to-door journey saves the stress of carrying cruise cases onto public transport.
Heathrow to Portsmouth Harbour, the Hard Interchange and the cruise terminal
Portsmouth Harbour station and the Hard Interchange bus station are next to the ferry port, within walking distance of each other. The cruise terminal at Portsmouth International Port is a few minutes away by taxi or shuttle. A coach from Heathrow arrives at the Hard Interchange, so you can walk or take a short taxi to the ferry. A private car takes you directly to the cruise berth or ferry check-in.
There is no single direct bus from Heathrow to Portsmouth Harbour, so use the coach to The Hard. Check which berth or terminal your ship or ferry uses, because the Isle of Wight ferries, the continental ferries and the cruise terminal are in different parts of the port.
The Isle of Wight
If you are heading to the Isle of Wight, the ferry terminals are close to Portsmouth Harbour, so the same arrival points apply. Check your ferry time and allow for check-in and the walk from the drop-off point.
Local taxi firms such as Aqua Cars
Local firms such as Aqua Cars are sometimes suggested as a cheaper alternative to an airport taxi. They can be a good fit for short local trips. For a long airport run, a pre-booked fixed-price transfer gives more certainty on waiting time, flight tracking and vehicle size. Ask what is included before you commit.
Time and cost comparison
The table at the top gives the quick view. The coach is cheapest, the train is slowest and hardest, and a private car is the only door-to-door choice. With a cruise or ferry deadline, a car is the safest.
Planning around your sailing or flight
Cruise ships often ask passengers to be off by about 8am, with embarkation windows set by the line. For a flight, plan to reach the airport three hours before a long-haul departure and two hours before short-haul. A private car lets you leave when you are ready, and a coach with fixed departures does not. Leave a buffer for the M25, which can add an hour on a bad day.
Disembarking and flying the same day
If your ship docks early, you may still wait for your luggage and for your group to be called. Build in time for that, and book your car for a time that includes a margin. A driver who tracks your plans can wait if disembarkation runs late.
Arriving at Heathrow, heading to your ship
After a long flight, allow 90 minutes to two hours to clear the airport before heading to Portsmouth. A late flight can mean a missed embarkation window, so book a car that tracks your flight and tell the cruise line if there is a delay.
Other ports
If you are comparing ports, see Heathrow to Southampton and Heathrow to Dover for the other main cruise routes.
