The simplest way to get from Oxford to Heathrow is The Airline, a coach that runs round the clock and takes about 70 to 90 minutes. A private car is door to door in roughly an hour. There is no direct train, so rail means a change at Reading or in London and is slower. This guide compares every option for Oxford to Heathrow, including the stops, fares and timing, and covers the return journey.
Oxford and Heathrow are about 50 miles apart along the M40 and M25, and the coach and the car use the same route. That makes them similar in speed, with the car adding certainty and the coach saving money.
I take the Airline when I travel light, but for a 5am family flight a car from our door was far easier. Everyone slept on the way.

In short: The Airline is the best value and the most flexible, and a private car is the most direct.
Choosing by situation
A student or visitor with one or two bags and no deadline will usually be happy on The Airline. A family, a group of three or four, or anyone with an early or late flight will often find a car comparable in cost per head once return fares are added. And if you are heading to a specific college, hotel or house, a car removes the walk and the taxi at the end.
The Airline coach
The Airline is run by the Oxford Bus Company and is the most popular way between the city and the airport. It runs 24 hours a day, with departures roughly every 20 minutes in the daytime and less often overnight. That frequency is its biggest strength: if you miss one, another is not far behind.
Where to board at each terminal
The coach stops at Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 (the Central bus station), Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. The pickup points are signed in each terminal, so check your arrival board. From Oxford, allow around 80 minutes to Terminal 5 and 70 to 90 minutes overall, depending on traffic. The coach also calls at stops along the route such as Lewknor and High Wycombe, which makes it useful if you live outside the city.
Oxford stops and fares
In Oxford the coach calls at Gloucester Green coach station, Headington and the Christ Church area, and you can often board or leave at more than one stop. Single fares are about £25 and returns around £31.50, with cheaper online and group fares (a return for four was quoted at £45 on one operator). Each extra case may cost around £5 on top of your allowance, so check before packing for a long stay.
Because operators changed fares and timetables from 19 July 2026 on some pages, always confirm before you travel. For more routes into Heathrow, see our coach to Heathrow guide.
Using the timetable well
Oxford to Heathrow bus times are easiest to read backwards from your flight. Decide when you need to be at the airport, subtract the journey time and a safety margin, and choose the coach that gets you there before that. Do not choose the last coach that technically arrives in time, because a delay on the M40 or M25 leaves you with no spare.
National Express and FlixBus
National Express and FlixBus also run between Oxford and Heathrow, usually with fewer departures than The Airline. Journey times are similar, and fares vary with the date and how early you book. They may suit you if the timetable matches your flight and you find a cheap advance fare.
The weakness is the choice. If you miss a departure, the next may be an hour or more away, whereas The Airline runs far more often. For that reason, many travellers use these services only when they can match them to a fixed flight time.
Train via Reading or Paddington
There is no direct train. One route runs from Oxford to Reading, where you change to the RailAir coach or a train to Hayes and Harlington and then the Elizabeth Line. The other goes from Oxford to London Paddington, then the Heathrow Express or Elizabeth Line.
Both take longer than the coach, from about 1 hour 45 to over 2 hours, and involve changes with luggage. They suit people who already have a rail pass, or who want to avoid the road. Our guide to Reading to Heathrow explains how the Reading link works.
The train has one real advantage: it is not affected by motorway traffic. If the M40 is closed, rail may be your best backup.
Private transfer from Heathrow to Oxford
A private transfer takes you from your terminal straight to your Oxford door. The journey takes 60 to 75 minutes in clear traffic. Black cabs and taxi quotes range from about £69 to £105, and pre-booked private cars typically run about £60 to £120 depending on vehicle and provider.
Fixed price, door-to-door college or hotel drop-off, groups and luggage
The price is agreed in advance, so M40 delays do not change the fare. The driver can drop you at your college gate, hotel or house instead of the coach station, which is useful with heavy bags, late arrivals or children. For four people, the cost per head is often similar to The Airline once you add return fares. Our Heathrow airport transfer page explains how to arrange a transfer.
Oxford-specific tips
Oxford has narrow streets, limited vehicle access in parts of the centre and busy ring roads, so give the driver the exact address or college gate. Students arriving at the start of term should tell the provider if they have trunks or boxes, because those need space. Hotels in the city centre can be hard to reach during events, so agree a meeting point in advance if the street is closed.
Oxford to Heathrow (the return journey and time to allow)
For the journey back to the airport, The Airline leaves from Gloucester Green and other stops. Plan to arrive at Heathrow at least three hours before a long-haul flight and two before short-haul, then add the journey time and a margin of 30 minutes for M40 and M25 delays.
For example, for a 12:00 long-haul flight you want to reach Heathrow by about 09:00. Add 90 minutes for the coach and a 30-minute margin, and you should leave Oxford by about 07:00. Use a car if you need a door-to-door pickup at an early hour, as the first coach times may not suit you.
Early flights and late returns
If your flight leaves before 8am, you will need to travel overnight or very early. The Airline runs round the clock, which helps, but a car from your door is simpler if you have luggage, children or a long walk to the stop. On the way back, a late arrival at Heathrow is also easier by car, because you do not depend on the frequency of the coach.
Oxford area towns: Bicester, High Wycombe, Abingdon
If you live outside Oxford itself, you can still use The Airline from stops like High Wycombe, or you can book a car from your door in towns such as Bicester or Abingdon. Check the coach stop nearest to you, and compare the cost of a car if the stop is far away. From Bicester, a local bus or train to Oxford connects to The Airline, but a car straight from your door is often simpler with luggage.
