Santiago's airport is where journeys trade feet for wings: pilgrims walk in, fly home — and with the 2027 Holy Year ahead, the field has renewed its runway, opened its first US nonstop and is gathering new routes by the season. The old town is fifteen minutes, Sarria's trailhead two hours, Finisterre the end of the world. One fixed price, flight tracked, the Camino understood.
Santiago's airport carries a poet's name — Rosalía de Castro, Galicia's own — and right now it is visibly training for a date: 2027, the next Holy Year, when the feast of Saint James falls on a Sunday and the Camino's crowds swell beyond their already-record numbers. The preparation is concrete. In spring 2026 the main runway was renewed in a thirty-five-day closure — resurfaced, relit, its navigation aids modernised for heavier and longer-haul traffic — and the first aircraft to land on it, on the twenty-seventh of May, came from Newark: United's three-weekly seasonal service, the first regular nonstop ever flown between Galicia and the United States. Around it the map is thickening — a record dozen international connections reported after reopening, Wizz Air adding Rome and Warsaw from December 2026 with a permanent base expected in February 2027, and a new Galician low-cost brand slated to launch eight routes this winter, plans we note in the proper tense.
What makes this airport unlike any other in Spain is the direction of its journeys. Most airports send people on holiday; Santiago receives the finished. Pilgrims walk into the city across weeks and leave through this terminal in hours — so our busiest work here runs both ways around the walk. Inbound, we carry walkers to the trailheads: Sarria, two hours east, where the final hundred kilometres begin and most first-timers start; or further, to O Cebreiro and beyond, packs in the boot. Outbound, we meet the finishers — legs done, flight booked — and the fifteen-minute run from the old town to the terminal is the gentlest mile of their entire Camino.
The geography around it is Galicia's green best. The old town — cathedral, arcades, the botafumeiro's church — is about fifteen minutes west of the Lavacolla field. A Coruña and its glass galleries are fifty minutes north; the Rías Baixas, Galicia's seafood-and-albariño coast, open to the south; and the far point writes itself: Fisterra, ninety kilometres west, where the old road runs past the cathedral to the lighthouse at what medieval Europe called the end of the world. The Camino ends at the cathedral; the old road ends at Finisterre — and the whole car goes at one fixed price, far point first, return margin kept.
Rain is Galicia's signature, and schedules here respect it the way we do: we track the flight, not the timetable, the pickup adjusts to the plane that actually lands, and the name board waits dry at arrivals. The airport of homecomings, met properly.
