Narita is Tokyo's distant door: 60-odd kilometres east, in Chiba Prefecture, a province away from the neon. The trains are superb and we say so — the Skyliner does Ueno in about 41 minutes — but the airport sleeps from midnight to 6 a.m., so late arrivals race the last departures and dawn flights leave before the first useful train arrives. Add a trolley's worth of luggage or a hotel far from the N'EX stations, and a booked car at a fixed price is the honest answer.
Begin with the geography the ticket hides: Narita is not in Tokyo. It sits 60–65 km east in Chiba Prefecture, and every journey to the capital is a real intercity leg — about 90 minutes by road, less by the fast trains. The terminal map earns a minute of study too. Terminal 1 hosts the Star Alliance carriers in its South Wing and SkyTeam (plus Peach and Zipair) in the North; Terminal 2 is the oneworld house; and Terminal 3, the low-cost terminal, is a 420-metre covered walk from T2 with outdoor gates and airstairs. T1 is not walkable from the others — a free shuttle links all three roughly every five minutes by day — so check which terminal your airline actually uses before choosing a meeting point.
The trains deserve their fame, and we give it. The Keisei Skyliner reaches Nippori and Ueno in about 41 minutes — as fast as airport rail gets anywhere — while JR's Narita Express fans out to Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and even Yokohama in 53–95 minutes, every seat reserved. Two honest footnotes ride along: not every N'EX serves every station, so a "direct" train may not be direct to yours; and both services stop running well before the airport's quietest hours. Narita closes to flights between midnight and 6 a.m., which squeezes the day's last arrivals into a sprint for the last trains — and puts dawn departures on the road before the first convenient train has left Tokyo. Those two margins, late and early, are where the car stops being a luxury.
The road has its own arithmetic. A taxi rank quote from Narita to central Tokyo is famously one of travel's expensive surprises, and the run takes an hour and a half either way; the airport buses are decent value but hostage to the same clock. A pre-booked transfer changes the shape of the problem: the price is fixed before you land, the driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a name board, and nobody is computing yen per kilometre at 11 p.m. with children asleep on the trolley. One more Tokyo-specific kindness: if your trip actually starts in Yokohama — a cruise departure from its piers, say — the car runs there directly, no cross-Tokyo transfer with luggage required.
Where you land matters less than where you finish. Shinjuku's towers, Shibuya's crossing, the old shitamachi lanes near Ueno and the Disney resorts at the bay's edge are all single fixed-price runs. And if a long layover strands you at the airport, the best secret in Chiba is ten minutes away: Narita-san Shinsho-ji, a thousand-year-old temple complex whose omotesando street of eel restaurants has rescued more layovers than any lounge. One car, one price — and Tokyo's distant door handled by someone who drives it daily.

60–65 km east, in Chiba Prefecture. Allow about 90 minutes by road; the fastest trains do it in 41–60 minutes depending on your destination.
Haneda (HND) is far closer to central Tokyo. If your ticket says NRT, plan the longer leg properly; for the return, check which airport you leave from — they are not interchangeable.
Skyliner is fastest to Ueno/Nippori (about 41 minutes); the N'EX serves Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Yokohama in 53–95 minutes, all seats reserved. Not every train calls at every station, so check your service — or skip the puzzle with a door-to-door car.
We track your arrival and adjust the pickup automatically. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, at the correct terminal.
T1 hosts Star Alliance (South Wing) and SkyTeam plus Peach and Zipair (North); T2 is oneworld; T3 is the low-cost terminal, a 420 m covered walk from T2. T1 isn't walkable from the others — free shuttles link all three.
Yes. Yokohama — including its cruise piers — is a direct run, and the bayside Disney resorts are on the way into town. One fixed price, luggage included.
