What the map does not hold, anywhere in the Bahamas, is a railway. The public answer is the Route 12 jitney, and we credit it honestly: it leaves from outside the airport roundabout, costs pocket change, and takes 45 minutes to an hour with stops — a fine local institution that was never designed for a family with suitcases.

Taxis here run on a mechanism worth understanding before you land: fares are fixed by destination zone rather than by meter, set by regulation, covering two passengers with a small addition for each extra — and on Paradise Island runs the bridge toll rides along. The system is honest; the queue is the problem. Nassau is one of the busiest cruise harbours on earth, and when a ship's thousands come ashore in the same hour your flight lands, the airport taxi line swells past forty minutes. A pre-booked car does not negotiate any of this: the price was fixed when you booked, the driver tracks the flight, and the name board is waiting whether or not six ships are in.

The run home deserves its own paragraph, because Nassau is the rare airport where you clear America before leaving the islands: US-bound flights use a dedicated terminal with full US preclearance — immigration and customs done in Nassau, so you land stateside as a domestic arrival. The price of that convenience is time: three hours before a US departure is the honest budget, not two, with Global Entry and TSA PreCheck easing the path for those who hold them. We plan return pickups backwards from the preclearance queue, not the departure board — the resort breakfast ends when the arithmetic says so.

The rest of the island bends to the same short distances: the Nassau Cruise Port and its rebuilt waterfront 20 to 30 minutes east for fly-cruise connections, the fish fry at Arawak Cay en route, and the west-end beaches minutes from the runway. Renting a car means left-hand driving and resort parking; most visitors conclude the fixed-price car wins. One price, one driver, and an island where the longest transfer barely outlasts the welcome drink.
