Chennai is the rare Indian metro where the airport maths works in your favour: the terminals sit at Tirusulam, only 16–21 km from the centre, and a real metro leaves from a station linked to them by walkway — about 35–45 minutes to Chennai Central until 23:50. The catch is everything the metro doesn't cover: post-midnight arrivals, luggage-heavy families, the OMR tech corridor and the run down the coast to Mahabalipuram. For those, a booked car at a fixed price is the honest answer.
Chennai inverts the usual Indian big-city airport story. Instead of the airfield fleeing 40 km into the countryside, the city simply grew south until it surrounded the runway — so the terminals at Tirusulam sit only 16–21 km from the centre, about 30–60 minutes by road depending on the hour. One piece of housekeeping first, because the terminal numbers here trip up anyone working from an old guidebook: all international flights now use Terminal 2, the new integrated terminal opened in mid-2023; Terminals 1 and 4 handle domestic; and there is no Terminal 3 at all — it was demolished to extend T2. If your notes say "international = T4", they are a few years out of date.
The metro deserves top billing, because Chennai is the first stop on many Indian itineraries where rail genuinely wins. The Blue Line terminates at an airport station linked to the terminals by walkway, and runs from about 05:50 to 23:50 — at peak, a train roughly every two and a half minutes. Chennai Central is 35–45 minutes away for a fare capped near ₹50–70, with Guindy, Egmore and Nungambakkam on the way. Two honest footnotes: the walk from a far gate to the metro concourse is longer than it looks with full luggage, and the last train at 23:50 is exactly the problem, because a big bank of international arrivals lands after midnight. There is even a second rail option — Tirusulam suburban station sits just across from the airport on the Tambaram–Beach line, absurdly cheap and frequent by day, though it is a local commuter service, not an airport one.
By road, the rules are familiar but milder than Bengaluru's. Prepaid taxi counters in the arrivals halls quote a fixed fare before you commit; Ola and Uber collect from designated pickup zones, and their prices climb after the midnight arrivals bank, precisely when the metro has stopped. The geography is kinder too: Tidel Park is about 14 km away and the OMR IT corridor at Sholinganallur around 22 km — a direct run down GST Road and past Kathipara junction, 30–60 minutes off-peak, longer in the evening crush but never the cross-city odyssey Bengaluru demands. A pre-booked transfer fixes the price before you land, puts the driver at the right terminal, and turns a 1 a.m. arrival from a negotiation into a handover.
The destinations are the reward. T Nagar's shopping streets, Mylapore's temple lanes around the Kapaleeshwarar gopuram, and the long sweep of Marina Beach are all within that short half-hour band. And Chennai is the gateway to one of India's great short road trips: the East Coast Road south to Mahabalipuram's shore temples, roughly an hour and a half to two hours door to door, with Pondicherry a longer haul beyond. One car, one price, and the driver waits while you watch the sun hit seventh-century granite.

Your driver waits in arrivals with a name board at the right terminal — useful at an airport where the terminal numbers have changed meaning.
About 16–21 km: the terminals sit at Tirusulam, inside the city's southern spread. Allow 30–60 minutes by road depending on traffic, or 35–45 minutes to Chennai Central by metro.
Tidel Park is about 14 km and Sholinganallur around 22 km — 30–60 minutes off-peak and longer in the evening crush, but a direct run rather than a cross-city crawl.
Yes — one of India's best airport rail links. The Blue Line terminates at a station linked to the terminals by walkway, running about 05:50–23:50, with peak trains every 2–3 minutes and the centre about 35–45 minutes away.
We track your arrival and adjust the pickup automatically. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, at the correct terminal, at no extra charge.
All international flights use Terminal 2, the integrated terminal opened in 2023. Terminals 1 and 4 are domestic, and Terminal 3 no longer exists — it was demolished to extend T2. Ignore older guides that put international flights at T4.
Yes. Mahabalipuram's shore temples are roughly 1.5–2 hours down the East Coast Road, and Pondicherry about 3 hours; for day trips the car and driver stay with you.
The last metro leaves at 23:50, so late arrivals use the prepaid taxi counters in arrivals or app cabs from the marked pickup zones — both busiest, and apps priciest, right after the midnight bank of flights. A pre-booked car with a name board skips that queue.
