Fukuoka is the airport every city wishes it had: barely 3 km from Hakata Station, with a subway that does the run in five minutes. The small print is choicer than the headline — the international terminal sits across the runway, joined to that subway only by a shuttle bus that winds down before the last train, and the airport itself keeps a strict 22:00 curfew. For international arrivals with luggage, and for every Kyushu road beyond the city, a booked car at a fixed price is the honest answer.
Fukuoka closes our Japan set with the inversion of where it began: Narita is a province from Tokyo, while Fukuoka's runway practically touches its city — Hakata Station lies 3 km away, and the municipal subway reaches it in about five minutes, Tenjin a few more, with trains running until well past midnight. For domestic arrivals travelling light, that sentence is the whole guide, and we are happy to say so. The airport has also been busy growing into its role as Kyushu's gate: a second runway opened in March 2025 for international departures, the international terminal doubled in size the same month, and a dedicated bus road now links the two sides of the field.
That growth contains the page's first irony. The international terminal stands across the runway from the domestic one — and from the subway — reachable only by road. The free inter-terminal shuttle does the loop steadily by day, but its frequency sags in the late evening and it finishes before the last trains leave, so the airport's most famous asset, the five-minute subway, is precisely the thing an international arrival cannot simply walk to. A direct Nishitetsu bus from the international kerb reaches Hakata in about eighteen minutes and is the honest public answer; with a family's luggage, the chain of shuttle, concourse and subway stairs is where a name board at your own terminal starts earning its fare.
The second irony is the clock, and it runs opposite to Tokyo's. At Haneda the flights outlast the trains; at Fukuoka the trains outlast the flights. A mandatory curfew holds the field silent from 22:00 to 07:00 at the neighbours' request, so there is no 2 a.m. arrivals bank here — instead, the evening's last flights bunch hard against ten o'clock, and a delay can turn into a diversion rather than a late landing. The practical reading: evening arrivals cluster, the kerb crowds all at once, and a pre-booked car that tracks your actual touchdown — and keeps its fixed price through the scrum — is worth most at exactly 21:45.
Beyond the city, Fukuoka is the trailhead of Kyushu, and this is where the car stops being a convenience and becomes the trip. Dazaifu's great Tenmangu shrine is half an hour away; the canal town of Yanagawa an easy hour; the onsen country of Yufuin and Beppu about two hours east, Kurokawa's riverside baths two and a half south — all door to door, luggage in the back, at one price agreed before you flew. And begin or end in the city properly: Canal City, a tonkotsu ramen pilgrimage, and the yatai stalls glowing along the Nakasu riverside, five minutes from a runway that goes politely to sleep at ten.

Hakata or Tenjin door to door with your flight tracked — and no shuttle-plus-subway chain when you land at the international terminal with a meeting at nine.
Child seats arranged ahead and one fixed price for the whole car — the five-minute subway is wonderful until the pushchair meets the shuttle queue.
Your driver waits in arrivals at your terminal — worth knowing: international flights land across the runway from the trains, reachable only by road.
About 3 km from Hakata Station — Japan's closest major airport to its city. The subway takes roughly five minutes to Hakata and continues directly to Tenjin.
The subway runs until after midnight from the domestic side, with first trains before 06:00 — generous hours the curfew-bound flights can't even use. The pinch is reaching the station from the international terminal late at night.
Not directly. The international terminal is across the runway, linked to the domestic side (and the subway) only by a free shuttle whose service thins late in the evening. A direct bus reaches Hakata in about 18 minutes — or a car meets you at your own kerb.
We track your arrival and adjust the pickup automatically. Your driver waits in arrivals with a name board, at the domestic or international terminal as your flight requires.
The airport observes a strict 22:00–07:00 curfew, so the day's last arrivals compress toward ten o'clock and delays can mean diversions. A pre-booked car tracks your actual touchdown and waits regardless.
Yes — Fukuoka is Kyushu's trailhead: Dazaifu in about half an hour, Yufuin and Beppu around two hours, Kurokawa Onsen about two and a half, all at one fixed price with the car staying with you.
A second runway opened in March 2025, used for international departures, and the international terminal doubled in size the same spring — queues move, but the terminal-to-terminal geography hasn't changed: still a road transfer.
