Grand Bahama keeps its airport close: central Freeport is minutes away and the Lucaya resorts 15 to 25. The honest picture is of an island rebuilding its front door — the terminal is modest since Hurricane Dorian, the long-promised redevelopment is still a promise, and the flight schedule is thin enough that missing one costs a day. There is no rail, and the jitneys are not built for arrivals. A booked car with your flight tracked is how Grand Bahama starts without a kerbside negotiation.
Freeport's airport asks for honesty, and this page gives it. Grand Bahama International sits just north of town — central Freeport is 5 to 10 km away, the Lucaya resort strip 15 to 25 minutes — and it is still recovering its old stature: Hurricane Dorian struck the island hard in 2019, today's terminal is a modest affair, and the much-announced redevelopment — a consortium around Manchester Airport Group, agreed back in 2023 — remains, in the official word, imminent. Our rule from other islands applies unchanged: we don't plan around promises. We plan around the airport that exists — small, quick to walk through, and perfectly workable when the ground leg is arranged.
The schedule deserves the same honesty. A handful of carriers serve FPO — Bahamasair and American at the core — reaching a short list of cities, and the timetable thins further in peak hurricane season, when suspensions are a known habit rather than a surprise. The arithmetic that follows is the island's real doctrine: where a missed flight at a big hub costs an hour, at FPO it can cost a day. So the transfer cannot be the weak link — we track the flight both ways, build the margin into the pickup, and treat the short drive to the terminal with the respect a thin schedule demands.
On the ground, the Bahamas' national rule holds: no rail, anywhere, and Freeport's jitneys — cheap and cheerfully local — are not a service you can stand in an arrivals hall and rely on. Taxis do meet flights, and they run on the islands' honest mechanism: the fare is agreed before the bags go in, not read off a meter. It is exactly that conversation a pre-booked car deletes — the price fixed in another country, days earlier, a name board in arrivals, and the left-hand-drive roads left to someone who drives them daily.
Where do FPO journeys end? Most at the water: Port Lucaya's marketplace and marina, the beaches that made the island's name, the Grand Lucayan and its neighbours. Freeport Harbour lies about a quarter-hour west of town for fly-cruise connections, and since July 2025 the island has a new neighbour of consequence — Carnival's Celebration Key, some thirty miles east, drawing ships and day-trippers along the coast road. One fixed price, one car, and the quieter of the Bahamas' two gateways handled properly from wheels-down.
Central Freeport is 5–10 km away — a few minutes by road — and the Lucaya resort areas 15–25 minutes. Freeport Harbour is about a quarter-hour west of town.
Carnival's new destination lies about thirty miles east and its guests arrive by ship. For shore days running the other way — ship guests heading to Lucaya's beaches or into town — we run the coast road to a fixed price.
Not usefully. Grand Bahama's jitneys are local and cheap but don't provide a reliable airport service, and there is no rail anywhere in the Bahamas. Plan on a car.
We track your arrival and adjust the pickup automatically. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board at no extra charge.
Taxis meet arriving flights and fares are agreed per destination before you load the bags — there is no meter. A pre-booked transfer removes that conversation: the price was fixed when you booked.
Yes — about 15 minutes from the airport, door to pier. We time the run to your boarding window, and on sailing days the thin flight schedule makes the tracked car worth its weight.
A full redevelopment has been agreed and announced, but it remains pending. Today's FPO is a modest post-hurricane terminal: quick to clear, light on comforts — and perfectly workable with the ground leg arranged.
