Bilbao's airport is the dove on the hill — Calatrava's white-winged terminal — and it just crossed seven million passengers for the first time, with a route map opening toward Newark, Edinburgh and beyond. The city is nine kilometres south; San Sebastián, which this field also serves, an hour and a quarter east. One fixed price, flight tracked, child seats fitted — the Basque Country door to door.
Bilbao's terminal has a name before it has a code: La Paloma, the dove — Santiago Calatrava's white concrete and glass, opened in 2000 and still the most architectural arrival in northern Spain. The field beneath it just flew past a milestone: more than seven million passengers in 2025 for the first time, a third straight year of growth, with international traffic at forty-five per cent and a corporate share near thirty — the mark of an airport that works all year rather than one summer at a time. And the map is visibly opening: United's Newark nonstop, launched in June 2025, gave Bilbao its first direct American route and returns each season at the end of May, while 2026 added Luxembourg, Edinburgh, Turin and Casablanca with Luxair and Austrian new to the field. Vueling, based here, carries nearly half the passengers; Volotea keeps its base alongside; Madrid and Barcelona lead the domestic map, Gatwick, Amsterdam and Munich the international.
The geography is kinder than most: the field sits at Loiu, nine kilometres north of the city — about fifteen minutes on an honest morning — and the transport honesty here cuts both ways. The BizkaiBus to Moyúa square is genuinely good: fifteen minutes, every twelve to fifteen, and we say so for the light traveller. The metro, though, does not reach the airport — an extension is proposed with no timetable, and a further bus link is pencilled for 2029 — so this page plans around the roads that run today. With a family's luggage, a dawn departure or a US check-in, the door-to-door car replaces the relay with one booking.
Here is the part the ticket doesn't tell you: this is San Sebastián's airport too. The coastal city's own airfield is tiny, so most of its visitors land at Bilbao and cover the hundred kilometres east — an hour and a quarter by motorway, a public bus only hourly. We run that corridor daily, priced before you fly, which turns the Basque Country's two great cities into one arrival. And for sailors rather than flyers, Getxo's cruise berth is twenty-five minutes away — gangway and gate bridged with flight and ship tracked together.
The shore-day and holiday map earns its own line: the Guggenheim and the Casco Viejo fill a Bilbao day; San Juan de Gaztelugatxe's stone staircase winds up the coast; and Rioja's wine country begins an hour and a quarter south — one fixed price for the whole car, far point first, return margin kept. The dove's passengers, landed properly.
Yes — about 25 minutes, with flight and ship tracked together for fly-cruise days.
About 9 km — usually 15 minutes. The Guggenheim and the old town are both inside that run.
We track it. The pickup adjusts automatically and the driver meets the new time at no extra charge.
Yes — this is effectively San Sebastián's airport too: about 100 km east, an hour and a quarter by motorway, priced before you fly. The public bus runs only hourly.
Yes — Rioja begins about an hour and a quarter south, Gaztelugatxe up the coast. One fixed price, far point first, return margin kept.
No — the metro doesn't reach the field; an extension is proposed with no timetable. The BizkaiBus to Moyúa is good for light travellers; with luggage, the door-to-door car wins.
Vueling (based, nearly half the traffic) and Volotea lead, with Lufthansa, Iberia, KLM and easyJet alongside — plus United's seasonal Newark nonstop, Bilbao's first direct US route.
